On Sound and Space

for two percussionists and piano

"Of sound and space" explores how parameters such as dynamics, attack, sustain, and placement in the room can be used as main drivers in the development of a piece. The symmetrical juxtaposition of the two identical drum setups allows for the distribution of the same or similar elements in space, often emanating from the centrally placed piano. The bass drum often serves as a trigger element, turning on or off the dreamlike sway of the piano and vibraphones. To me it was interesting to observe how harmony and melody lose importance as form-giving parameters and, through their freedom, convey a dreamlike state whose development and form are shaped solely by the aforementioned parameters.
