For Steelpan
for amplified solo steelpan and electronics
08:00 min minFor Steelpan was composed in the summer of 2023 for and in close collaboration with percussionist Russell Fisher.
Writing for an instrument that is so rare on the classical concert stage and at the same time has such a strong history and cultural tradition in its country of origin, Trinidad and Tobago, as the steelpan, offered both - a great challenge and a great freedom.
The challenge for me was to respectfully take an instrument with such a clear traditional context out of its environment and allow myself to find my own access to it. At the same time, the absence of tradition in the Western classical concert repertoire allowed me to feel very free aesthetically. The working process was a journey of discovery that I tried to reflect in the composition. It is based on a steady, continuous pulse around which the player emancipates themselves more and more from the electronic layer until they finish the piece as a soloist.
